Laser Pointer FAQs

What are "Super Safe" laser pointers?

Our Class II (<1 mW) laser pointers (our "Super Safe" line) are preferred by schools and teachers, especially when kids will be handling them. These are considered safe by the FDA as long as they are not pointed directly in the retina for prolonged periods of time.

Are 5 mW lasers safe for kids?

Class IIIA laser pointers (<5 mW rating) should normally be handled by adults. They can damage a person's retina if pointed directly at the eye for many seconds to minutes, but our natural "look away" reflex usually prevents any damage by keeping exposure short.

Which color is the best?

Green is the most visible, red is the safest around kids, and violet lets you experiment with fluorescent materials. They each have their use, so consider getting one of each!

Which is best for learning about lasers?

We recommend our Laser Blox, which are specially designed for classroom demonstrations and experiments. They won't roll, can be stuck on a white board, and can be stacked magnetically for ray experiments.

How easy is this to see outside during the day?

Our Class 2 red laser (up to 1mW) is best suited for indoor use. Outdoors in direct sunlight, the dot will be difficult to see since the human eye is less sensitive to red light and the sun's brightness overwhelms the beam. For outdoor activities, shaded conditions or lower-light settings will give much better results.

Can I do sky pointing with this laser?

We strongly advise against pointing any laser at the sky, aircraft, or flight paths. Under U.S. federal law (18 U.S.C. § 39A), aiming a laser at an aircraft is a federal crime punishable by up to 5 years in prison and fines up to $250,000. Always direct the beam at surfaces well away from any aircraft, airports, or airspace.

Does the room need to be dark to see the laser beam?

A fully dark room is not required — standard classroom lighting works for most activities. To see the beam traveling through the air, a moderately dimmed room with some airborne particles (like classroom dust) helps considerably. Dimming the lights will noticeably improve dot brightness.

Is this laser pointer visible when pointing at a TV?

In most cases, laser pointers will not be visible when pointed at a TV screen. Modern LED, LCD, and OLED televisions emit bright backlighting that overpowers the laser dot, and their anti-reflective coatings scatter or absorb the beam. This is not a limitation of our product — it is simply how modern TV screens are engineered. A matte projection screen, whiteboard, or wall will give you clear, reliable visibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I order with a tax-exempt certificate?

We only automatically charge tax to shipping addresses in Ohio and Maryland. If you're in these states, please email us your tax exempt certificate with purchasing email you'll use. We will keep it on file and mark your purchasing email as tax exempt. Then you can place your order normally without being charged taxes.

If you're outside of these states, you can go ahead and order now without being taxed. Then, go ahead and email us your certificate so we can mark your account. If we expand in the future, we may eventually charge taxes in your state.

How do I order using a Purchase Order and Invoice?

We'll need to set up a custom order for you and mark it for payment due later. Please email us to receive a quote that includes shipping and taxes. Then, email us your PO. After shipping, we'll email you the invoice with payment details. Please note that if we do not have an existing relationship with your institution, we may require payment before shipping to reduce our risk of fraudulent orders.

Do you offer classroom discounts?

We offer discounts on most products for orders of more than 10 of any one item. Another price decrease is available at 25 pieces - typically what's needed for a classroom. If you are interested in those quantities, please email us and include your item and quantity details for a quote.

  • The risk is real

A NIST report found 90% of green laser pointers on the market tested out of compliance with FDA Safety Regulations.

  • Every batch tested

We test every batch of laser pointers to ensure total power output is FDA compliant.

  • Infrared Filtered

Green laser pointers can leak invisible infrared light. Ours are made with IR filters for extra protection.

  • Trusted by professionals

We've been providing laser pointers to educators and researchers for over 10 years.
