How Do Green Laser Pointers Work?

Green laser pointers use a process called frequency doubling to produce their distinctive 532 nm light. Here’s how it works:

  1. An infrared laser diode first emits light at 808 nm.
  2. This beam passes through a neodymium-doped crystal (Nd:YVO₄), converting it to 1064 nm infrared light.
  3. A second crystal (KTP) then doubles the frequency, converting it into visible green light at 532 nm.

Because this process generates additional infrared light, high-quality green lasers include infrared-blocking filters and specialized coatings to ensure only visible green light exits the device. This is crucial because we can’t see IR light - so an excess of energy in the infrared spectrum could blind us before we even realize it’s hitting our eyes.

Which power level of laser pointer should I buy?

  • Class 2 (<1 mW)

    Class 2 laser pointers are ideal for small classroom activities with students below Grade 9. We call these our "Super Safe" Classroom Lasers — designed to be safe for both kids and pets, making them perfect for hands-on optics education.

  • Class 3R (<5 mW)

    Class 3R laser pointers are best for classroom demonstrations by teachers and for use by advanced students who can handle them responsibly. These are the brightest class deemed safe for consumer use by the FDA. Our "look away" eye reflex prevents damage.

Laser Pointer FAQs

What are "Super Safe" laser pointers?

Our Class II (<1 mW) laser pointers (our "Super Safe" line) are preferred by schools and teachers, especially when kids will be handling them. These are considered safe by the FDA as long as they are not pointed directly in the retina for prolonged periods of time.

Are 5 mW lasers safe for kids?

Class IIIR laser pointers (<5 mW rating) should normally be handled by adults. They can damage a person's retina if pointed directly at the eye for many seconds to minutes, but our natural "look away" reflex usually prevents any damage by keeping exposure short.

Which color is the best?

Green is the most visible, red is the safest around kids, and violet lets you experiment with fluorescent materials. They each have their use, so consider getting one of each!

Which is best for learning about lasers?
